Reiki is used to describe a Japanese healing technique that was discovered by Dr Mikao Usui in Japan in the 1800s. His tradition and methods were passed onto several Grandmasters of Reiki and then passed down through this lineage to Reiki Practitioners.
Reiki can take different forms, but the Usui System of Natural Healing is the most widely know and practised.
Reiki Master Teachers and Practitioners are trained through an initiation process where Masters pass on their knowledge and expertise to their students. It can take several years for a student to reach Master Teacher level. The word Reiki is made up of two words, ‘Rei’ and ‘Ki’ which translates to ‘Universal Life Energy’.
Reiki helps us remember our connection to the Divine (Source consciousness), and to each other and is a wonderful way to stay relaxed, balanced and content, and ease the worries of everyday life. By opening ourselves up to Reiki, we allow love and light to flow into us and through us, reminding us of the connection we hold to all those we love and the universe.
At the moment I offer Reiki to humans and animals remotely via online sessions. Remote Reiki works just as well as in person Reiki, the benefit being that anyone can receive the healing from anywhere in the world. The receiver decides whether to receive the Reiki energy, it is never forced or given without consent. It is a respectful and gentle therapy that gives great peace. Reiki has no religious denomination or bias, it works alongside all faiths and in my experience deepens the connection individuals have with Divine power.
How a Reiki session works
Reiki re-balances the life force energy system, promoting a sense of well-being and peace in the receivers mind, body and spirit, which promotes healing and balance, whether that is physical, mental, emotional or spiritual.
Reiki needs to be received in a quiet space, ideally led down so the person is completely able to relax. Even if the session is remote, I would recommend that time is set aside just as they would in person, to receive the treatment. If the Reiki is in person and for a person, then they are fully clothed. Depending on what the person is comfortable with, the treatment may be 'hands on' but only around the head and shoulders. This is discussed and agreed prior to the treatment.
Reiki with animals is slightly different. It is usually offered as a meditative approach, rather than a direct approach. This encourages the animal to trust me and be open to the treatment. If the session is in person, and an animal wants me to use touch they will show that, otherwise it is offered whilst sat near the animal.
How Reiki helps
Reiki can promote many healing benefits:
Physically this can include reduction in stress, increased immune function and pain relief. It can also help aid recovery from physical trauma or surgery. And it's great for an energy boost or general relaxation as it balances the body.
Mentally it is a very safe and gentle technique, ideal to help with abuse or trauma, confidence, and any kind of behaviours that are no longer helpful. It is also a great way to get an extra dose of relaxation, peace and contentment and quiet the mind.
Emotionally it is a particularly calming, peaceful treatment, so very comforting and wonderful with helping those in need of reassurance. And it can help balance the emotions, especially for those who are in need of comfort and healing.
Spiritually it is deeply healing and reassuring, allowing us to connect with source energy. For any person or animal suffering from a terminal condition, it is a loving and sensitive way to help a soul transition into the next part of their journey.
"Animals offer us their unconditional love, trust and grace. Let us do the same for them, and each other."
